N1.2bn deals: EFCC freezes Obanikoro daughter’s account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has frozen an account linked to Shalewa Obanikoro, the daughter of a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.
According to EFCC investigators, about N1.2bn passed through the account which belongs to an oil firm.
Shalewa, who is a signatory to the account, was said to have personally mandated Fidelity Bank to transfer N800m from the account to another account within the bank.
A source in the anti-graft agency on Tuesday said, “We have frozen an account in which Obanikoro’s daughter is a signatory. She specifically mandated the bank to transfer N800m from the account to another account.

“We discovered that money was paid into the account at various times. The money came in N50m, N20m, N30m and various sums.
“She said the money was for oil and gas transactions. So, we have frozen the account as investigations continue. We want to know where the funds came from. At least N1.2bn has passed through the account.”

The EFCC was said to have made the discovery of Shalewa’s transactions when it was investigating the N4.7bn allegedly paid into the account of Obanikoro’s two sons – Babajide and Gbolahan.
The money, which was paid into the Diamond Bank of Sylvan McNamara, was allegedly shared among Obanikoro, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose; and the then governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

While Omisore is in detention for allegedly receiving N1.3bn, five properties, allegedly belonging to Fayose, have been seized while his three Zenith Bank accounts have been frozen.

A house belonging to Obanikoro’s two sons in Ikoyi, Lagos, has also been seized. Obanikoro and his sons have, however, remained in the United States for the last 14 months.

The anti-graft agency had, last week, quizzed Shalewa and seized her passport to prevent her from travelling to the US.
“We seized her passport because we were told that she was planning on travelling soon. We had to prevent her from travelling since she is part of the investigation,” a detective said.

Apart from the N4.7bn arms scam rocking the Obanikoro family, MOB Integrated Services Ltd, a company headed by Obanikoro’s second son, Gbolahan, was implicated by the Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede-led Presidential Committee on Verification and Reconciliation in 2012 over an alleged petroleum subsidy fraud.

The company was said to have made three transactions valued at N5,393,592,906.62. However, investigations revealed that the company only made one transaction valued at N3,261,263,992.52 verified as legitimate.

The difference of over N2bn was allegedly embezzled as MOB did not make the needed oil supply.
However, sources at the commission told our correspondent that after Obanikoro was appointed the Minister of State for Defence, the case was mysteriously suspended indefinitely.
The oil business linked to Obanikoro’s daughter has therefore opened a new dimension to the subsidy fraud case.

A source at the EFCC said, “Obanikoro’s case is very easy to investigate because unlike other politicians, he used his children to carry out most of his alleged crimes. Out of his four children, we have seen suspicious transactions in the accounts of three of them. There is no way these young guys will have billions in their accounts if they were not fronting for their father.”

Meanwhile, the EFCC on Tuesday grilled a former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, for receiving N100m from the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).
The EFCC, however, discovered that N15m was also transferred to Okupe from the account of Destra Investment Limited, a company owned by the immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, who is on trial for allegedly receiving N400m from Dasuki.
Ironically, Okupe is one of the defence witnesses in the case against Metuh.
A source at the EFCC said, “Okupe came again as usual and we grilled him over the funds he has openly confessed to receiving from Dasuki. He claims to have spent all the money but we keep making fresh discoveries.
“He received about N15m from Destra Investment Limited, owned by Metuh. Okupe is also one of Metuh’s defence witnesses. Okupe had appeared before the Federal High Court to defend Metuh and yet he (Okupe) has confessed to receiving money from Dasuki and he also collected N15m from Metuh.
“When we confronted him with evidence, he was shocked and could not respond.”
Okupe had, on May 19, 2016, told Justice Okon Abang that Metuh received N400m from Jonathan but argued that the fund could not have emanated from the ONSA.
While defending Metuh, Okupe had said, “I am surprised to hear that the Office of the National Security Adviser was used to distribute money for Jonathan’s presidential campaign. However, the President could also use his tremendous goodwill to source funds to assist his party or help to execute special programmes.

“Besides, as the candidate for election, the President has immense capacity to raise funds as a candidate. He did not use any government establishment as his pseudo-sponsor.”
It was learnt that Okupe risked being charged with conspiracy alongside Metuh depending on the outcome of investigations.

An EFCC investigator added, “With this new revelation, it is possible that Okupe knew that Metuh’s N400m emanated from the ONSA but went to court to defend Metuh in order to cover his tracks, having received N15m. We are still investigating the matter.”

I have not defected from APC – Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki says he remains a proud member of the All Progressives Congress, amid speculations that he has defected from the party.

A statement by Saraki’s Special Assistant, New Media, Bamikole Omishore, said his media team were aware of a “false publication” making the rounds on social media.

“This fabrication is entirely untrue as the Senate President stands committed to the APC; a party that he helped midwife and worked for its victory in the 2015 elections,” the statement, which was posted on his Facebook page said.

It suggested that the report were probably influenced by the fact that Saraki, in his official capacity as Senate President and chairman of the National Assembly, had attended the end of session event of the Peoples Democratic Party caucus on Wednesday evening.

The statement, however, stressed that he only spent 30 minutes before leaving the PDP members to continue with the event.

“The Senate President would like to assure every Nigerian that he is committed to the APC-led government and appreciates the confidence reposed in him and the APC during the 2015 General Elections,” it said.

No Man U deal for Pogba yet – Agent

Paul Pogba’s potential world record transfer to Manchester United isn’t finalised yet, the Juventus midfielder’s agent said on Thursday.

United have reportedly had an $86 million offer ($113 million, 102 million euros) turned down by the Italian champions as they try to lure France international Pogba back to Old Trafford four years after allowing him to leave on a free transfer.

Jose Mourinho’s side are expected to return with an improved bid that approaches Juventus’s £100 million asking price after United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward met Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola to thrash out personal terms this week.

But Raiola took to Twitter on Thursday to insist the deal was not concluded yet.

“There’s no deal done regarding Paul Pogba, lots of bla, bla, bla,” Raiola tweeted on his verified account.

All protocol(s) observed By Reuben Abati

Nigerians love events and ceremonies. The engine of governance in fact runs on this special fuel, which in many ways has become an occasional excuse for waste and idleness. I have in the course of work attended and compered many of such events; one thing that I find curious is the obsession with acknowledgements. If you are the compere at any typical Nigerian event, the organizers are bound to give you what they call a protocol list, usually a long list of persons whose presence must be acknowledged. You are also expected to recognize persons, especially if they are government officials, according to an established ranking order.
This means you can’t recognize a Member of a State House of Assembly before a Member of the House of Representatives, and you can’t “acknowledge the presence (as it were) of” a Minister before a Senator. Any slight mix up is likely to fetch you a reprimand and complaints about how you are such an insensitive compere who wants to ruin an event that had been so well planned. Getting the pecking social order right is not even enough, you must be politically correct when you deploy such egoistic phrases as Your Excellency, The Distinguished, The Most Honourable, Your Honour, Your Worship, My Lord, Your Grace, Your Eminence…Only God knows what these honorifics do to the Nigerian big man or big woman’s mind. When you get it right, you can see the person actually believing the myth about he or she being so excellent, distinguished or honourable. Some would even rise and wave to the crowd.

The institutionalized flattery involved, is of course not limited to the special guests, sorry special guests of honour (!) who occupy the high table, or the top table, or better still, the reserved table. Other guests also have to be introduced. The rule is never to overlook any important person. If it is a government or corporate event, nearly everybody is important. If certain persons are mistakenly overlooked, they would insist on sending their personal assistants to the compere to remind him or her of how a grave error has been committed. Some would send their business cards, or a note or summon the compere to their table to register not a complaint but a protest!

Indeed, being a master of ceremony at a Nigerian event could be the ultimate test of humility and human patience. I once introduced a certain VIP as Chief XYZ. I was summoned and reprimanded. “He is not a Chief, but a High Chief”, he said. Correction taken, apology offered. “It is now my pleasure to introduce once more High Chief XYZ, the whatever 1 of anywhere.” The man grinned cheerfully. His retinue of assistants applauded so loudly, you would think the event was all about him. There certainly must be something special about being a High Chief; ordinary Chiefs, I guess, must be less human. But consider this: on another occasion, I mistakenly referred to another VIP as a Chief. The man sent for me, and whispered into my ears: “next time you call me a Chief, I’ll sue you, only unserious people go about saying they are Chief this and Chief that. I have never taken a chieftaincy title in my life; I am simply Mister. You understand? ” Yes, sir!

Again, apologies tendered. I went back to the microphone to introduce the Mister properly, cleverly leaving out his anti-chieftaincy commentary. But how do you deal with royalty? Now that many Nigerians act and behave like Republicans, traditional rulers and the royalty have also learnt to leave the comfort of their palaces to hustle like other Nigerians on the streets, and so, you can’t miss royal presence at most events. But there is a challenge, acknowledging them. You have to know who is His Royal Highness or which traditional ruler is better addressed as His Royal Majesty.

Nigeria ‘technically’ in recession – Finance Minister

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has said that Nigeria is “technically’ in recession.
Adeosun said this at the Senate on Thursday while speaking about the state of the nation’s economy and the implementation of the 2016 Appropriation Act.

She also said the violent activities in the Niger Delta had affected government’s revenue.

When asked by the Senators if there was a strategy by the government to diversify the economy, Adeosun said the Federal Government was tackling the problem by bridging the infrastructural gap.
“The fundamental thing needed to diversity the economy is infrastructure and we are attacking the infrastructural deficits,” she said.

Kendall Jenner is having a 'fling' with Rapper A$AP Rocky?

According US Weekly, Kendall Jenner & A$AP Rocky have a thing going on. Read their report below
“It’s a fling,” a source close to the Estee Lauder spokeswoman confirms exclusively in the latest issue of Us Weekly, adding, “It’s not serious.” The duo first sparked dating rumors last month when they spent time together in the City of Love. Jenner, who traveled to France for Menswear Fashion Week, was spotted strolling through the streets of Paris with 27-year-old A$AP, whose real name is Rakim Mayers.
The two then headed to a dinner date at L’Avenue restaurant. Later that evening, they danced the night away at Paris’ Cartel Club. On July 13, Jenner and the “Electric Body” rapper rendezvoused again at the Mr. C Beverly Hills hotel. The stars have been friends for a while: A$AP attended the launch of Jenner’s PacSun line (with her younger sister, Kylie) in NYC in February.
But a source close to the Harlem, New York, native echoes the sentiment that the romance is casual. “He thinks Kendall is hot as hell,” the insider tells Us. “He’s just having fun.”

Niger Delta Avengers say they are not in talks with the presidency

Barely 24 hours after President Buhari disclosed that his government is in talks with the Niger Delta militants to stem the tide of attacks on oil installations in the region, notable militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, released a statement on their website saying they are not aware of such talks. Read their statement below ...
"Our attention has been drawn to media report that the President is in touch with Niger Delta agitators including the Niger Delta Avengers but the truth is that we are not aware of any peace talk. If there is any such peace talk, it means the President is talking to their mercenaries set to disturb the genuine struggle of the agitators. President Buhari led government is not sincere to the Nigeria people and their foreign allies. If we are to engage in any peace talk we made it clear that the international community must be part of it. The President know our demands. So they should stop deceiving the international oil companies, the general public and the international community.

Justin Bieber throws back a fan’s gift.. says ”I don’t want that sh it”

Justin Bieber left fans shocked at his concert in New Jersey on Friday night, where he paused the concert to lecture one of his fans for giving him a GIFT.
After the excited Belieber threw their hat on-stage for the singer, he threw it away, grabbed his microphone and said said:
“Take this moment to listen and try not to give me a hat or whatever you’re trying to throw onto the stage right now, because I probably don’t want that s**t.
Realising he went a little overboard with his remarks, the star quickly added:
“Sorry, maybe that was a bit mean…”
He then went on a bizarre rant about the meaning of life.
“I just wanted to take this moment to acknowledge the fact that we all have a purpose, that we all have a meaning to life and it’s not, like, we just don’t live to die. And this life is not all struggles. I know that sometimes when we wake up in the morning, and it’s like ‘God another day.'”
He then ended it by addressing the fan
“Sorry for throwing your hat, but you ruined the moment.”

Idris is a big liar, I didn't steal police vehicles - ex-IGP Arase

A former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase on Monday in Abuja described as lies the allegation by his successor,Ibrahim Idris that he took away 24 police vehicles. According to him, Idris should cross check his handover notes which contains every information needed by his successor on vehicles bought by the police.

The ex-IGP in a statement issued from London, United Kingdom, United Kingdom, where he went for his son's graduation. also denied getting any letter from Idris since he has been out of the country.

According to him, all vehicles bought by the police under him were distributed to the state commands and other appropriate units of the Nigeria Police Force. The statement reads:
"I suspect there must be a disconnect somewhere because every information needed by my successor are provided in my hand-over notes. I'm also not aware that any letter was written to me because if there was any dropped in my house, someone would have alerted me. "It's unfortunate that this matter is being made a media issue because my successor has my telephone number and could have called me for any clarification or even sent me a text message rather than addressing the media on an issue well documented in my hand-over notes."
Idris had claimed that Arase went away with 24 police vehicles while the seven Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, who retired alongside him, also carted away between seven and eight cars each.

Idris said that he had written Arase to return the cars, which included two official bullet-proof BMW 7 series cars, adding that the retired police chief and his DIGs had yet to return the vehicles.

He had explained that a special investigation team was already looking at the records of police vehicle purchases in the last three years as well as how they were distributed. Idris had said, "If you look through the windows of my former office and from the report from my (Force) transport officer, you would see cars but a week to the day I would resume, all these cars disappeared.
