In Nigeria, being signed to a record company is a big deal for most artistes as it affords them the platform to showcase their talent.
But singer, Aituaje Iruobe, who is known as Waje in the Nigerian entertainment industry, has been able to forge ahead in her career without a record deal.

She told Sunday Scoop that she had many offers in the past and is still getting offers, but she has decided to be a solo artiste.

“I see myself as an independent artiste. I have been like this for a while. My experience with the first professional record deal I signed made me decide to stand alone. When I started out in the industry, I was signed to a record label that did not do anything for me for a long while.
“If I see a young talent, who wants a record deal, I will tell him or her the advantages and disadvantages”, she said.

“However, there are so many people I have  had collaborations with. Even though I am an independent artiste, I always partner with people and organisations. To be honest, I cannot do everything on my own,” Waje stated.

Inasmuch as new talents are emerging in the industry, she insisted that she is not under pressure because she tries to improve herself every day.

She said, “It is one thing for you to be a top artiste and it is another thing for you to maintain it. For me, I just want to improve. If you’ve been following me closely, I am also very involved in developing young talents in any way I can. I might not be able to give out money, but I advise and mentor many of them.

“I do not see new talents as threats to me; I even think it is a blessing that we have them. My fans will always be mine as long as I continue to create great music.”

Similarly, the mother of one stated that she has no plans to float a record company like most of her colleagues.
Waje said, “For me, maybe in the next 10 years, I might have a management company or agency. But I do not really know much about record labels. I will not like to do what I am not vast in. I know that I can offer services as an adviser or consultant; but I am not there yet too.”

Singer, Olajuwonlo Iledare, aka Jaywon, is still basking in the love he has been getting from fans over his latest single, Joromi.

Speaking with Sunday Scoop about what it feels like running his own record label, Jaywon said, “People always have different opinions but you need to understand that while I was in Kennis Music, I was also spending my money to promote myself as well. It’s just about me doing what I know how to do best. In whatever I do, I always make sure that I give my best, and it has been working for me.
“Truly, there are challenges, but it’s the same thing everywhere in the world. Getting the right people to work with, access to funds, and things like that. However, I don’t really consider those things as serious challenges; I just see them as a phase that I must pass through.”

On what he misses about his former record label, he said, “Kennis Music was a big family where we had about eight artistes and the CEO, who was like a father to us all. I really miss that part; I miss the fatherly love that I got from Baba Kenny Ogungbe. Having lost my dad since I was a kid, I saw a father in him and that’s one of the reasons our relationship worked to that extent.”

Shedding light on how Joromi came about, he said, “The idea for the song came from my new artiste. He invited me to the studio to listen to some songs that he was working on. It was then that I heard that beat and I decided to do something on it. The response has been really great, and I can say it’s one of the biggest songs I’ve had in a while. I really appreciate the love I’ve been getting from fans.”
For the ladies out there who have hopes of getting hitched to the singer, the coast is still clear. Speaking on marriage, Jaywon said, “When it comes to marriage, you have to be very sure who you want to spend the rest of your life with. You really have to take your time because it is not something that should be rushed. When the right person comes along, you all will get to know about it.

My past haunts me –Terry G

Terry G

In the past, the word controversy was synonymous with Gabriel Oche Amanyi, aka Terry G. If he was not reported fighting, he would be caught smoking publicly or doing other attention-grabbing things.
But in an encounter with Sunday Scoop, the music producer said he did all thatin the past was as a young boy, who was just having fun.
He stated, “I do not like controversies. I was only a victim of controversies. All that I have done in the past that made me controversial were mistakes anyone could commit. I am still paying the price for my past. I did certain things I can never do again. I was a young boy, who was just having fun and enjoying music. My past still haunts me as I speak to you, as I am being judged for those actions. I have done things I am not proud of.”

According to him, pictures on the Internet of him smoking marijuana were taken many years ago. He insisted that one could not find images of him doing such again as he now understands the implication.

He added, “I am now a scapegoat all because I represented the streets and I was not afraid to show it. I sacrificed myself for the new generation of artistes. All I was being criticised for are those things artistes do freely now and no one talks about them.”

“I have many regrets, which I take as lessons in a way. If I had known better, I wouldn’t have done certain things.

“But I do not think what I sing or say determines who I am. One day, Nigerians will realise that art is different from reality. I made my mother love Patience Ozokwor because she had the impression that she was a wicked woman because of her roles in movies. I made my father love many musicians too. I made them understand that what they were doing was an art.

“Sooner than later, Nigerians will understand that the all the crazy things I do are just for the art; I am an actor. I am yet to do most of the things the new artistes do in their videos, yet people still see me as the most terrible person. In other countries, nobody makes an issue out of those things,” he said

Mum loves Range Rover and desires to own one — Iya Rainbow’s son

Mrs. Idowu Philips, otherwise called Iya Rainbow and son, Oluwafemi
Oluwafemi is a son of celebrated Nollywood actress, Mrs. Idowu Philips, otherwise called Iya Rainbow. He talks about his mother’s career with GBENGA ADENIJI
Tell us about yourself.
I am the fourth child. I was born and grew up in Lagos. I attended primary and secondary schools in the state before proceeding to the University of Ilorin and the London South Bank University for undergraduate and post-graduate degrees respectively.
I live in the United Kingdom. I enjoy writing and socialising with friends and making friends. I derive joy in film-making.

My late father, Ayanfemi Oroniyi Philips, was a lecturer at the University of Lagos. He was also an actor and founder of Osumare Theatre Group. Before his death, my mother used to act part-time, being a nurse.  My mother took up the leadership of Osumare Theatre Group after his death and since then, she has been acting full-time.
What are the memories you can recall growing up with your mother?
My mother became the breadwinner of the family following the death of my father. She is solely responsible for the upkeep of my brother, sisters and me. My mother made sure we all received quality education.
She is highly disciplined and a strict woman. She always devotes quality time for all her children while we were young and even now. Despite being strict, my mother loves all of us and she is close to us. She helped us with our school assignments and sometimes beat us whenever we misbehaved.
Where were the places she took her family to for relaxation and did she tell you why she chose the fun spots?
Though she is a busy woman, she found time to take us out to the cinemas to watch stage plays by Adedeji Ogunde, Baba Mero, Baba Sala, Duro Ladipo and many others. She also took us to the rehearsals of the Osumare Theatre Group. The rehearsals held three times weekly at the time. The reason she chose the cinemas and theatre rehearsals as places for us to have fun was because she wanted us to have a deep knowledge of theatre and enjoy educative shows.
Your mother is a popular actress. Did she encourage any of her children to follow in her footsteps in terms of career choice?
My mother is an understanding person. She respects her children’s individual choice and interest in the area anyone desires. She has been supportive since I embraced the film-making. Sister Olabisi and I showed interest in film-making and my mother has been very helpful in our career choice. She also gave others, who showed interest in other careers, her support.
Which of the movies she has featured in is your favourite and why?
I started writing scripts for Osumare Theatre Group since my secondary school days. My mother also played lead roles in all the movies. Some of them included Alamu se’ni yan (roughly translated means Alamu is a nice man). The movie was a hit when it was released. It was followed by Odunmbaku; Elepo robi; and Anikulapo among others. I wrote scripts for the movies as I earlier said and they were directed by Abbey Lanre, who is a prominent director. I am happy with my input in all the movies. We have worked together on many movies and I really learnt from her experience. I will continue to learn from her.
How does she create time for her family?
My mother used to be quite busy when we were growing up; but despite that, she ensured she gave us attention. She is a single mother of five children. As a nurse and actress, she made herself available and spent any of her spare time with us at home.
In what ways did she enforce discipline on any erring child?
My mother is a disciplined and strict woman. Though she is strict, that didn’t prevent her from showing love to us. She corrected us with love.
Can you recall anytime she disciplined you and what you did wrong?
I remember when I was young. I went to play and later rode a bicycle. When my mother returned home, she did not see me. She searched for me and when she couldn’t find me, she decided to wait until I came home. She took her time to beat me.
Who are your mother’s friends?
When we were growing up, my mother’s best friends were Mrs. Akala and Dewura. She also has other friends among wives of well-known colleagues in the movie industry.
What is her best form of relaxation?
My mother’s best form of relaxation is watching movies. If she is not watching movies, she would be in church.  She owns a Cherubim and Seraphim church in Ogun State. The church celebrated its 10th anniversary on October 15, 2017, and eminent actors, actresses and singers graced the occasion.
How close are you to her?
We are very close. As she is close to me, she is also close to my siblings.
What are the values you have learnt from her?
My mother respects everybody. She treats her colleagues and everyone, both young and old, equally.  She is also a good listener. She takes her time to listen well to people before passing judgment. I have learnt all these from her and endeavour to exhibit them in my relationship with people.
How does she react when angry?
She rarely gets angry and when is angry, she avoids talking or reacting immediately.
In what ways would you say her name has opened doors for you?
Like I said earlier, I started working closely with my mother in film-making when I was in secondary school. This gave me the opportunity to work with prominent actors and actresses.
What kind of mother is she?
My mother is a caring, loving and accommodating mother. She accommodates friends and children of family members in her house. She is responsible for their upkeep and payment of their school fees.
What is her favourite food?
She enjoys porridge and eba with vegetable stew.
What is her favourite drink?
She loves drinking water and at social occasions, she can take malt drinks.
What is her normal schedule like?
My mother has what I will call a normal schedule. If not for film-making, which always requires her to be at locations, she would prefer to be in church all the time. She enjoys being in church to teach God’s word and preach to people.
What is the feeling like watching any of her movies?
It is usually interesting watching the movies my mother features in. She improves always in spite of her years of experience in the industry.
She always wants to watch any film she features in with people so they can point to her mistakes for her to improve on them. I am also currently working with her on a three-in-one movie project, featuring distinguished Nigerian and United Kingdom actors and actresses.  The movie, titled The Saint, is a true-life experience work to be shot in London and various parts of Nigeria.
Did you receive any form of special treatment from colleagues and teachers by virtue of who your mother is?
I can only say that because of my experience in the movie industry coupled with the movie I did with my mother and some famous thespians, my colleagues respect me. This is largely because in the movie industry, experience counts.
How sociable is she?
My mother always tries to be present at any occasion she is invited to. Sometimes, she acts as the master of ceremonies at some of the events. But now, she tends to attend church activities more.
What kind of music does she listen to?
My mother enjoys listening to the music of King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey and IK Dairo.
How does she like to dress?
She is comfortable wearing native attire.
What is her favourite quote?
She likes to say, “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambition.” This is true because some friends always do that; but the really great, good friends make you feel that you too can become great.
What brand of car does she like?
Her favourite brand is Range Rover. She has a desire to acquire one.
How did she cope after losing her daughter?
Being a religious person, my mother held on to the word of God as her pillar during the period.
Did she tell you why she didn’t remarry?
I remember that she always expressed how much she loved my father. She said she promised to devote her life and time to the children and the Osumare Theatre Group after my father’s death.
Your mother is popularly called ‘Iya Rainbow.’ Did she tell you how she got the appellation?
She got the appellation, Iya Rainbow, at a film location when she was asked the meaning of Osumare in the Osumare Theatre Group. She explained that it means rainbow and since then, people started calling her Iya Rainbow.
What does she want to be remembered for as an actress?
There are two things my mother always talks about which she desires to be remembered for apart from her contributions to the movie industry.
She wants to produce a movie, ‘Aye Rabiatu’ to document her true-life story and build a church and name it after her father, Ifemade. She already built the church which is a cathedral.
What is her view about the state of the nation?
My mother believes it is time to have a frank talk about how to restructure the country. Restructuring is the way to go. At 57, she feels the country is moving at a slow pace trying to overcome numerous challenges associated with developing nations.
The President has achieved approximately 30 per cent of his electoral promises from my point of view. He has done well by getting a court order proscribing the Independent People of Biafra. He would do better by labelling the criminal herdsmen a terrorist group especially with the mindless killings they have carried out.
As Nigeria is 57, her thought about the country is that it should attain true federalism as being advocated by our leaders across Nigeria. We need to start utilising our potential and resources as a nation. We have a long way to go as a country despite our size, resources and human potential. Corruption is still like a cancer eating deep into the fabric of our nation.

Kanye West makes brief return year after breakdown

Kanye West

Rap superstar Kanye West is back nearly a year after suffering a breakdown — making a brief musical appearance in which he appears to keep his feud with Taylor Swift alive.

West, a once omnipresent celebrity with a prolific media presence and high-profile marriage to Kim Kardashian, abruptly ended a tour and was hospitalized in November 2016 after unusual rants on stage.

Making his most visible appearance this year, West contributed a verse on a song released Tuesday by Cyhi The Prynce, an Atlanta rapper whom West earlier signed to his label imprint.
The song, “Dat Side,” expounds on the perils of fame and hits back at critics, with West speaking of being African-American in his affluent Los Angeles neighborhood.

“Neighbors said they think I gave the neighborhood a black eye,” the 40-year-old father of two raps.
He also appears to reference his ongoing rift with Swift. In his 2016 song “Famous,” West boasts that the pop star may have sex with him as he takes credit for her celebrity — a reference to how he disrupted her at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Swift voiced anger at the lyric and hit back in “Look What You Made Me Do,” a vindictive track released in August.

West on the latest track references the name of the controversial song as he raps: “The people claim to know you… get famous on you / Then they go and blame it on you / You just good, they can’t ignore you.”

West’s last major public appearance following his hospitalization came in December when he unexpectedly showed up at Trump Tower in New York to meet then president-elect Donald Trump — whose aides said he was mulling an official role for the rapper.

Contestants turn Miss Peru pageant into protest

Contestants broke with tradition and turned the Miss Peru pageant into a protest highlighting violence against women in one of South America’s most dangerous countries for females.
In elegant ball gowns, the 23 finalists in Sunday’s televised pageant at the Lima Municipal Theatre gave voice to thousands of women who are victims of harassment, sexual and physical abuse, and murder.
Instead of giving their bust, waist and hip size, the contestants took turns  reciting a litany of shocking facts about violence against women in Peru.
“My name is Camila Canicoba, I represent Lima and my measurements are: 2,202 cases of feminicides reported in the last nine years in my country,” one said.

“Eighty-one percent of people who attack young girls are close to the family,” another said.
“One girl dies every 10 minutes due to sexual exploitation,” said another. Yet another: “more than 70 percent of the women in Peru are victims of street harassment.” Each sharply delivered phrase shook the audience, which had been expecting traditional light entertainment.
“I think that the fact that you are looking at your regional representative, at the queen of your department, giving open and real figures about what happens in our country is alarming,” contest organizer Jeccica Newton told AFP.
“Unfortunately there are many women who do not know, and think they are isolated cases,” said Newton, Miss Peru 1987.
So far this year, 82 women have been murdered and 156 cases of attempted murder have been registered against women in Peru, finalist Karen Cueto said from the stage.
The figures highlight Peru’s ranking as second only to Bolivia as the country with the worst record of violence against women in South America, according to the Observatory of Citizen Security of the Organization of American States.
Newton said the pageant contestants themselves were no exception. Of the 150 who began the contest, five have been the victims of violence, including rape, she said.
Violence against women became a front page issue in Peru after the rape of a volunteer for the national census program. Two television journalists then publicly declared they had been victims of violence by their partners, and there have been endless news stories about women being beaten or stabbed, and minors raped.
The stream of news has sparked calls in Peru for the death penalty for rapists.
The normally trite question and answer session with the event’s host was dramatically different, too. Instead of being asked about favorite hobbies or charities, the women were prompted for their responses on what to do about violence.
“Every day we see in the news that more women die at the hands of their partners or their ex-partners. If you had the opportunity to change the laws, what would be the right one for the crime of feminicide?” This was one of the questions.
Andrea Moberg, representing Peru’s eastern department of Loreto, answered that rapists should be punished with life imprisonment.
Romina Lozano, representing Callao, said her plan would be to “implement a database containing the name of each aggressor, not only for feminicide but for every kind of violence against woman. In this way we can protect ourselves.”

In the end, the judges elected her Miss Peru 2017.
Lozano will walk with the other contestants at the head of a march to highlight violence against women in Lima on November 25.

“The national queen must be the ambassador of ordinary women, of all women who have no voice,” said Newton.

Sexual assault: Beverly Hills police investigating Weinstein, Toback

(FILES) This file photo taken on May 23, 2017 shows US film producer Harvey Weinstein posing during a photocall as he arrives to attend the De Grisogono Party on the sidelines of the 70th Cannes Film Festival, at the Cap-Eden-Roc hotel in Antibes, near Cannes, southeastern France, on May 23, 2017. The Weinstein Company has launched an internal probe over sexual harassment claims against co-chairman Harvey Weinstein, confirming he has taken an "indefinite" leave of absence. Revelations that the Hollywood mogul sexually harassed women for nearly three decades prompted three of the company's nine board members to resign, according to The New York Times which broke the news in a bombshell report earlier this week. / AFP PHOTO / Yann COATSALIOU

The Beverly Hills Police Department said Tuesday it is investigating “multiple complaints” against disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein and director James Toback, who face numerous allegations of unwanted sexual encounters.

Accounts of abuse by Weinstein that were published last month in The New York Times and The New Yorker encouraged others to speak out, unleashing a cascade of allegations of sexual harassment and assault against leading figures in Hollywood and elsewhere.
The police department’s statement, which was titled “Recently Reported Assaults,” did not provide details about the complaints and said that no additional information would be released at this time.
More than 50 women including stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Mira Sorvino have accused 65-year-old Weinstein of sexual abuse and harassment, although he denies forcing himself on anyone.

The Los Angeles Times interviewed 38 women who accused Toback of unwanted sexual encounters, and the paper said it was inundated with emails and phone calls from more than 200 additional women after the publication of its story.

Rob Kardashian sues Chyna

Rob Kardashian is suing Blac Chyna over an incident last December during which she allegedly punched him in the face and tried to strangle him with an iPhone cord. The reality star has filed a lawsuit against his ex for assault, battery and vandalism.
Rob Kardashian claims in his lawsuit that the model, with whom he shares a nearly one-year-old daughter, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when she allegedly attacked him on the night of December 14, 2016. According to Kardashian’s suit, the incident began when Chyna began playing with his gun and pointing it at the camera while on a FaceTime call with two of his friends. He alleges she later attempted to choke him with an iPhone cord, then began striking him in the head and face as he ran away, resulting in injuries to his neck.
Chyna also allegedly caused more than $100,000 in damage to Kardashian’s house during the altercation by breaking down doors, kicking in walls, smashing a television, destroying a cell phone, and wrecking many additional pieces of property. Because Kardashian was renting the house from his sister Kylie Jenner, she’s also included as a plaintiff in the lawsuit. Jenner also says in the legal filing that Chyna harassed her on multiple occasions by repeatedly warning her to take an STD test because she was dating Tyga.

OMG Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are having a baby

From our Kardashian sources, we have discovered that the family doesn’t see Kylie as a 20-year-old. They think her age is both deceptive and irrelevant, because she’s developed a maturity way beyond her years.
Right or wrong, the family feels her success in business and financial independence gives her license to do what she’s wanted for 2 years … to have a baby. The fam was shocked at first, but is accepting.
So the question … why didn’t she have a baby with Tyga? We’re told their relationship was never solid enough for a baby … at least that’s the way she felt. That said, she was eager to become a de facto stepmom to Tyga’s son, King Cairo. And she’s an involved aunt to 6 kids.

As for having a baby with Travis … she got pregnant within 2 months of starting to date him. What we don’t know … whether this was a planned pregnancy or not. Either way, we’re told Kylie immediately embraced it. We don’t know if Travis felt the same way.
As for Kylie’s family, Rob Kardashian is living proof age doesn’t always matter.
By the way… Kylie has said in the past, waiting to have a baby till you’re 30 is way too far. Kylie and Travis are having a girl.
