A father-of-two was last night charged with the murder of his wife of two years who was found dying when a friend called by their home.

The friend raised the alarm almost as soon as she arrived at the couple's terraced home on Saturday afternoon to find mother-of-two, Simone Grainger in distress. Ambulance staff were called and despite trying to save the woman, she later died in the arms of paramedics after she suffered what is believed to be "severe head injuries".

Detectives launched a major hunt for her technician husband Steven Grainger, 32, and he was arrested several miles away 10 hours later. The 32-year-old father, who friends said had worked as a technician for the Insta Group, was taken to nearby police cells and was charged on Tuesday night by detectives from the Thames Valley Police Major Crime Team.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said on Monday that the scene had been sealed off as forensic science experts combed the house for clues. Police declined to say whether a weapon had been involved or how 30-year-old Mrs Grainger's injuries had been caused at the red brick home in Windsor Way, Calcot, Berkshire, in England.
Simone leaves behind two children, a boy and girl who are both of primary school age. He husband, whose address was given as Hartford Road, Reading, Berkshire, by police, is due to appear before magistrates on Wednesday.
