Mohammed Fawehinmi, eldest son of the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi has revealed an emotional but triumphant experience similar to that of the Chibok girls who were, on April 2014 abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.
In an exclusive interview with greennews.ng, Mohammed Fawehinmi, who is currently the head of his late father’s law chambers in Lagos said that he owes his life to President Muhammadu Buahri who saved him during an invasion by the Maitatsine sect in the 80’s.
Like Abubakar Shekau of Boko Haram, the leader of Maitatsine group was Muhammed Marwa, a controversial Islamic preacher with lots of followers which earned him the nickname – “Maitatsine”, meaning “one who curses”. This Islamic sect whose activities became violent launched attacks on Churches, government establishment, pupils, Christians, moderate Muslims, among others in Northern Nigeria in 1980s.

Fawehinmi, while chatting with greennews.ng, said that President Muhammadu Buahri was a fantastic man, adding that he and his brother would have been killed if he (Buhari) hadn’t intervened in the unruly activities of the Maitatsine sect.
He said: “He saved my life when I was in Federal Government College, Sokoto. He saved my younger brother’s life when he was in Federal Government College, Maiduguri. So, I owe him a lot. The man is a fantastic man.
“The Maitatsine sect just like this Boko Haram came to our school. He (Buhari) had information that they were ravaging Schools. So he sent soldiers and they came to the periphery and sent in mobile policemen. They were able to catch some of them (Maitatsine sect) while trying to escape”.
Similarly, Fawehinmi commented on the emergence of the New Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who was alleged by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana to have sponsored the Boko Haram insurgents when he was Governor of Borno State between 2003 and 2011.
Falana asked Mr. Sheriff to explain to Nigerians the basis of the appointment of Alhaji Buji Foi, a Boko Haram leader as the Commissioner of Religious Affairs in Borno State.
The legal practitioner (Fawehinmi) who defended Falana, told greennews.ng that, “If you look back in history, when he (Sheriff) was contesting for Borno State Governor. The people he allegedly used to achieve his aim were dumped and these people are the ones who culminated into this sect.
“I remember when the Russian envoy came to Nigeria to warn General Obasanjo that these people are becoming too many in that Sambisa Forest. Obasanjo replied that nobody would try nonsense with him. At that point, nobody did anything. But immediately Yar Adua came in, there was an allegation that a policeman killed their leader, Mohammed Yusuf and they began to torment trouble. So in a way he (Falana) is right”.
Falana had on September 3, 2014 said that Sheriff and the former Boko Haram leader, late Mohammed Yussuf were allies, an allegation which Mr. Sheriff has declared as false.
Speaking on President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent complaint that the judiciary was his main headache in the ongoing anti-corruption war, Fawehinmi noted that, “There is no smoke without fire.”
“From what I know, some of our legal practitioners are corrupt. If Buhari never saw anything, he would not say that the judiciary are his main headache. Buhari is absolutely correct. The President is someone that has nothing to lose. He has been known for that since he was a young man.”
Fawehinmi also threw his weight behind the president’s anti-corruption crusade, affirming that it has accorded the country International honours.
He said, “I am in full support. I’m 5000% in support. You know my Father was a main man. Now, world leaders have begun to show us respect because of him (Buhari).”
