Bale was known to have offered private support for Benitez to Madrid president Florentino Perez in recent months, and in a dressing room where the former Spurs winger has few allies he trusted in Benitez's ability to bring the best out of him.
But in spite of Manchester United's long-term interest , which will be revived in the summer, Zidane insisted that Bale is a key player for the club.
"I understand that he was annoyed with the departure of Benitez because he was an important coach for him," Zidane said.

"But he is going to have the same treatment from me as with Rafa.
"He is important for the squad and fundamental for the team. What he has been doing recently is phenomenal.
"I am going to give him all my affection and support so that he plays well."
The World Cup winner was speaking in his first press conference since being named the new head coach of Real Madrid last night.

And, after Benitez was binned for falling out with key figures and playing football deemed too defensive, Zidane, 43, was keen to promise an attacking style.
"The football has always been important, beautiful football, and that’s the line I will be taking.
"Attacking, balanced football, and that’s it... That’s the message.
"I was a player here and the important thing is to play football, which is what this club has always been about. Play from the back, quickly into the opposition half of the pitch, keep the possession of the ball. That’s my footballing idea. Fast, attacking."
